Southern Illinois Octogenarian Receives Congressional Gold Medal
World War II-era cadet, Olive June Smith, Received the Congressional Gold Medal for her Civil Air Patrol service on 18 November 2017 at the Williamson County Airport in Marion, Illinois. The now, Mrs. June S. Minton joined the CAP squadron at the Cairo, Ill. airport on September 9, 1944, where she received flying lessons in an Aeronca single-engine, high-wing aircraft.
Mrs. Minton became a private pilot shortly after the war and continued to fly for many years. She retired from the Illinois Department of Veterans Affairs. State Rep Dave Severins did the presenting of the award and Carol Klaine, Congressman Bost’s Outreach Representative attended the event. The Shawnee Composite Squadron hosted the event.
CAP’s Congressional Gold Medal honor was signed into law in 2014 to recognize the over 200,000 members who served during World War II.
